Rockabilly comic book clerk Clarence (Christian Slater) is basically Quentin Tarantino in this film, or at least the Tarantino Quentin would have wanted to see looking back at him in the mirror: movie geek as gun-slinging romantic hero. Patricia Arquette plays Alabama, the girl of his dreams. And of course she’s packing adventure in her handbag, cops and robbers on her tail.
Tony Scott straightened out Tarantino’s screenplay and imbued the movie with a fairytale sweetness that vaccinates its violence. But it’s the richly funny and skilfully escalated verbal riffs which make the whole thing sing — and which turned on the top-notch cast.
This is the best film Quentin Tarantino never made.
