Picking up from where he left off in Robocop, Paul Verhoeven imagines a future controlled by conglomerates via designer technology. Doug Quaid (Schwarzenegger) is a working stiff who keeps dreaming about Mars — perhaps if he went there, he could sleep easy? It’s just about affordable, with the purchase of memory implants — and Quaid can choose a custom-made ego-trip to go with it. But something goes wrong (or does it?). Quaid has already been to Mars (or has he?), and his memories erased (hence those dreams?). Now they want him dead.
“The best mindfuck yet!” says Quaid, as the plot takes another Z-bend and warp factor 10. Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s short story, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, this mashes philosophy, meta-commentary and ultra-violence with subversive panache.
Total Recall is slick, sly and subversive.
