Three Colours: Blue

The first of Polish filmmaker’s acclaimed Three Colours Trilogy, inspired by the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity and the French flag, the Tricolour, Blue stars Juliette Binoche as the wife of a celebrated composer who loses her husband and child in a car accident. In the aftermath of the tragedy, she seizes the opportunity to create a new existence for herself, “free” from the past and its relationships, but her old life proves impossible to simply deny. The cinematography by Kieslowski’s regular collaborator Sławomir Idziak is simply transcendent, and there is a remarkable operatic score by Zbigniew Preisner, doubling as the dead composer’s final work.

Three Colours: Blue won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival, sharing the prize with Robert Altman’s Short Cuts.
