Not many cop movies invoke Chaucer, Milton and Dante, but not many cop movies go so far as Seven to plunge us into the darkness of men’s souls. Brad Pitt is the young detective paired with world-weary partner Morgan Freeman to investigate a spate of grisly murders.
David Fincher and DP Darius Khondji powerfully communicate a vision of the modern city as a Babylonian den of iniquity, in which good men fight a losing battle against evil. Audaciously bleak, and literally dark, Seven was emphatic enough to become an against-the-grain hit and established Fincher’s commercial and artistic credentials.
