Quentin Tarantino’s favourite crime writer Elmore Leonard enjoyed a surge of good movies in the mid 90s with the release of Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and Jackie Brown. All were witty, knowing thrillers, but they were quite different in tone and feel. Out of Sight is sexy and romantic, cosmopolitan, and full of Soderbergh’s sleight of hand — it shuffles its scenes like a card sharp, playing with time, freezing some moments, running lines out of chronological context to tease and test the audience. It’s a seductive technique, but it helps that George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez are smoking hot as the bank robber and the FBI agent who fall in love mid-pursuit.
As directed with terrific panache by Steven Soderbergh, these two sultry stars take an intricate Elmore Leonard crime tale and give it steam heat.
