An American backpacker, Jesse (Ethan Hawke), meets an insouciantly French girl, Celine (Julie Delpy), on the train to Vienna. Their conversation sparks, so they decide to spend the next 14 hours together until it’s time for his flight home. They walk and talk. The meeting is fleeting yet it will mark the rest of their lives.
One of the most romantic movies of the 90s, Before Sunrise marked the beginning of what would prove to be a longstanding and prolific collaboration between Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and especially Ethan Hawke (currently, they have released nine films together, including two equally lovely sequels to this one). It’s a movie about the intimacy of deep conversation. And there are no smartphones to distract them.

The charm — the midsummer enchantment — never feels forced; it steals up and wins you. A true romance.
